Background information über 'Shadows Of The Sun'
More than a decade after its initial release, "Shadows Of The Sun" stands as Ulver's most introspective and deeply personal statement - a haunting meditation on cosmic indifference and the weight of existence. This seventh studio album from the Oslo-based collective represents a dramatic departure from their earlier works, eschewing the dance-floor subversions of later releases for something far more contemplative and interior. The album explores themes of life, death, love and loss through an aesthetic lens of profound beauty, creating what founder Kristoffer Rygg described as their most personal record to date.
At its core, "Shadows Of The Sun" is built around elegant string arrangements floating on spectral seas of electronics, punctuated by divine trumpet flourishes and the soft dance of piano keys. The creative triumvirate of Rygg, Jørn H. Sværen and Tore Ylwizaker are joined by a string quartet and notable guest musicians including electronic legend Christian Fennesz, theremin virtuoso Pamelia Kurstin, and Norwegian jazz musician Mathias Eick. Rygg's vocals, delivered mostly in lower registers, negotiate between loss and acceptance with baroque pop sensibilities. The album's emotional weight is perhaps best exemplified by their haunting cover of Black Sabbath's "Solitude", which fits seamlessly into the record's melancholic framework.
