VARGSHEIM · Erleuchtung | CD

Jewel case CD.

Background information about 'Erleuchtung'

Erleuchtung is the kind of record that opens a door and then quietly locks it behind you. Vargsheim deal in a black metal that breathes slowly — tremolo riffing that shimmers rather than bludgeons, drums that push and pull like a tide, and a vocalist who sounds less like a frontman than a witness. The whole thing is drenched in that cold, glinting atmosphere German black metal does so well, but there is real songwriting underneath the frost.

The album's centerpiece is "Weg Aus Scherben", twelve-plus minutes that never once feels long. It builds from a whisper of clean picking into a full-throated surge, drops away into near-silence, then comes roaring back with a melody you will hum days later. Elsewhere, "Welt Im Schillerndem Eis" sets the tone with a hypnotic, almost trancelike groove, "Erlöser" and "Flamme Zum Nichts" bring the fury, and the short, sharp title track "Erleuchtung" lands like a held breath finally released. "Bete, Oh Herr" and "Götter Von Staub" round things out with a grim, ritualistic weight.

What makes this record stick is its patience. Nothing here is rushed, nothing is wasted, and the production keeps the guitars sharp and the low end warm enough to feel physical. It is music for long walks in bad weather and for the moment the streetlights come on. Play it loud, play it in the dark, and let it work on you.
