Background information about 'Let Us Pray'
Let Us Pray is where Vital Remains planted their flag in the blood-soaked soil of American death metal, and decades later it still reeks of brimstone and bad intentions. This is the Rhode Island crew at their most feral, all serrated riffing, blast-beat fury and that unmistakable growl from the crypt. The production has that raw, humid basement feel that so many of us fell in love with in the early nineties, but the songwriting is sharper than the sound lets on, with tempo shifts that hit like a knee to the ribs.
What makes this record endure is the sheer conviction. There is no posing here, no half-measures, just a band hammering out unholy anthems with the desperation of people who meant every word. The guitar work is nasty and precise in equal measure, the rhythm section pummels without ever turning to mush, and the whole thing carries that strange, grim grandeur that separates the true believers from the tourists. Put it on loud and you can almost smell the incense and the sweat of a packed club.
