Few bands in death metal have ever sounded this twisted, and even fewer have made that twistedness feel so gloriously inevitable. Immolation's "Failures For Gods" is the sound of a band who took the genre's blueprint and set it on fire just to watch the shadows dance. Released at the tail end of the nineties, it stands as one of the most uncompromising statements in the New York outfit's catalogue - a record that trades cheap brutality for something far more sinister: atmosphere, dissonance, and riffs that coil around you like smoke in a locked room.

From the opening crush of "Once Ordained" through the title track's serpentine crawl, the band piles on layers of jagged guitar work, Ross Dolan's cavernous growl, and drumming that never quite settles into anything comfortable. Tracks like "No Jesus, No Beast" and "God Made Filth" are masterclasses in controlled chaos, while "Your Angel Died" drags the whole thing toward a bleak, hypnotic finish. This is death metal with brains and bile in equal measure - the kind of album that reveals new details on every spin.
