There's something deeply unsettling and utterly captivating about Wailin Storms. Hailing from the American South, this band has been kicking up a glorious racket for years now, blending noise-drenched blues punk with a gothic atmosphere that feels both ancient and urgently present. The Arsonist, their fifth album and first for Season of Mist, is exactly the kind of fire-starter you'd expect from a band that's been sharing stages with the likes of Acid Bath and Eyehategod.
Recorded by Matt Talbott of Hum in full analog, this thing sounds raw, lived-in, and gloriously unpolished. Opener Dead End takes a Lynchian turn with its death rattle leading straight into a waking nightmare — Storms croons about birds plucking out eyes over a backdrop that's equal parts swampy blues and post-punk tension. You Never Answered is a deafening plea to put down the damn phone and answer the night's call, while the title track burns slow and beautiful. The whole thing's haunted by real-life anxieties, raging against everyday trappings and endless wars, but fueled by the need for connection. Cover paintings by frontman Justin Storms himself. This is noisy, bluesy, gothic rock at its finest — raw, emotional, and absolutely on fire.
