There's something beautifully unhinged about Wailin Storms. Hailing from the murky swamps of the American South, this band has always walked the line between a whiskey-soaked blues punk howl and gothic rock's darkest corners. The Arsonist, their fifth full-length and debut for Season of Mist, finds them fully ablaze — and honestly, it's a glorious fire to witness.

Recorded entirely in analog by Matt Talbott of Hum (yes, THAT Hum), the album crackles with a raw, lived-in warmth that digital just can't replicate. Opener Dead End kicks things off like a Lynchian fever dream, all death-rattle guitars and creeping dread. Storms croons, "Calm night / Birds keep plucking out our eyes" — and you know right then you're in for something special. The title track The Arsonist smolders with slow-burning intensity, a love song that feels like standing too close to a bonfire. You Never Answered is a deafening cry to put down the goddamn phone and feel something real again. This is music that rages against the numbing numbness of modern life, against endless wars, against the quiet desperation of everyday existence. But even at its most chilling, there's a desperate need for connection running through every groove. "Like the wind controls the sea," Storms howls, "You always had a hold on me." It's raw, it's real, and it burns.
