Background information about 'Rehearsals 1997-1999'
There are demos, and then there are documents. XASTHUR's Rehearsals 1997-1999 is neither a polished studio affair nor a half-baked bedroom recording — it's a raw, breathing artifact from one of black metal's most enigmatic figures. Malefic's early work has always carried a certain spectral weight, and this collection captures his vision at its most unfiltered. Across ten untitled tracks, these rehearsal tapes from the late '90s offer a glimpse into the formative years of what would become a truly singular discography.
What strikes you immediately is the atmosphere. These aren't just run-throughs; they're incantations. The murky production, the distant drumming, the guitars that sound like they're being played in a cold, empty church basement — it all adds up to something deeply immersive. There's no polish here, no second-guessing. Just the raw, skeletal framework of XASTHUR's signature sound. For those who've followed Malefic's journey from Nocturnal Poisoning onward, this is essential listening. For newcomers, it's a fascinating look at the roots of a legend in the making.
