Background information about 'Suicide in Dark Serenity'
What started as a modest EP in 2003 has grown into something far more significant – Xasthur's "Suicide in Dark Serenity" stands as one of the most revered milestones in American black metal history. This isn't just another reissue; it's a carefully curated expansion that adds a haunting rehearsal version of "Nocturnal Poisoning" to the original masterwork. The album captures Scott Conner at his most devastatingly effective, weaving together the bleak atmospherics that made the Nordic second wave so compelling with a uniquely American sense of isolation and despair.
The six tracks here showcase Xasthur in their purest form – before the acoustic experiments, before the genre-hopping, when raw emotion and unfiltered darkness were the only currencies that mattered. From the instrumental intro that sets the stage for what's to come, through the title track's crushing weight, to the bone-chilling "With Hate Freezing My Veins", every moment feels essential. The rehearsal version of "Nocturnal Poisoning" offers a fascinating glimpse into Conner's creative process, stripping away any studio polish to reveal the naked brutality beneath.
