Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath stands as the most important and influential band in heavy metal history, having quite literally invented the genre in Birmingham, England in 1968. Formed by Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass), and Bill Ward (drums), the band transformed from a blues-rock group called Earth into the dark, heavy pioneers who would define an entire musical movement. Their revolutionary approach combined Iommi's detuned, crushing guitar riffs - born from a factory accident that cost him two fingertips - with Butler's thunderous bass lines, Ward's powerful drumming, and Ozzy's haunting vocals to create a sound that was heavier, darker, and more ominous than anything that had come before.
The band's first two albums, Black Sabbath (1970) and Paranoid (1970), established the template for heavy metal with classics like "Iron Man," "War Pigs," "Paranoid," and the ominous title track "Black Sabbath." Throughout the 1970s, albums like Master of Reality, Vol. 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Sabotage continued to push boundaries and cement their legacy. Despite numerous lineup changes over their 50+ year career - including Ozzy's departure and return, the addition of legendary vocalists like Ronnie James Dio, and various other musicians - Black Sabbath maintained their status as metal royalty. Their final performance with the original lineup took place on July 5, 2025, at Birmingham's Villa Park in the "Back to the Beginning" concert, just weeks before Ozzy's passing on July 22, 2025. With over 75 million albums sold worldwide, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and an immeasurable influence on countless bands, Black Sabbath's legacy as the godfathers of heavy metal is forever secure.
