The North Carolina quintet remains deeply rooted in Appalachian soil, where mountain folk traditions seep through their heavier passages, yet this album truly bridges the gap between earthbound country and interstellar exploration. With pedal steel wizard Jed Willis now officially joining the fold, tracks like lead single "Dig My Heels" begin with boots planted firmly in rugged pastures before launching into the great beyond, where Willis' steel guitar swirls like stardust across the Milky Way.

"The Turning" weaves a compelling narrative that spans both genres and generations in humanity's eternal quest for immortality. The album follows The Rider, a spurred heroine whose extraterrestrial world gets turned upside down by The Traveller, a mysteriously ageless gunslinger who arrives with double-barreled riffs atop galloping drums. These star-crossed outlaws race against time and seasons in a maze-like story that reveals new twists at every turn. While the setting may be otherworldly, the themes of family, aging, death, and rebirth hit remarkably close to home, especially poignant given that the band finished recording just weeks before Hurricane Helene devastated their beloved Asheville.
