E-L-R's third full-length Atropa belongs firmly in the latter category. Named after the genus of deadly nightshade, this record is exactly what its botanical namesake suggests: beautiful, hypnotic, and quietly lethal. The Swiss duo-turned-trio-turned-duo-again have crafted something that defies easy categorization, drifting between the weight of doom and the ethereal shimmer of post-metal with an almost ritualistic grace.

What strikes you first about Atropa is how much space these two musicians — bassist/vocalist I.R. and guitarist/vocalist S.M. — manage to conjure. There's a cavernous depth to tracks like "Oaken Reaper" and "Cobalt Wound" that feels less like standard doomgaze and more like standing at the edge of something vast and unknowable. The album was forged during a period of profound transformation and illness, and you can hear that struggle etched into every droning bassline and every ghostly vocal line. This isn't music that simply wallows in darkness — it transmutes it. The lyrical journey moves through grief, delirium, obsessive love, and resilience, lingering in that liminal space where yearning and loss become indistinguishable. Former drummer M.K., whose emotive style helped define the band's earlier sound, was sadly forced to depart due to health issues during the recording process, and that absence haunts the album like a specter — not as a weakness, but as a presence that shapes the record's raw, unguarded honesty.

Musically, E-L-R balance doomgaze and post-metal with something darker and harder to pin down — the band themselves describe it as a sound drifting "between weight and dissolution, beauty and poison," and honestly, that nails it. "Archeress" builds from a whisper to a crushing crescendo with the patience of a predator, while "Saltwinds" and "Echo Space" close the record on a note that feels less like an ending and more like an arrow loosed into the void — irreversible, unstoppable, bound to its trajectory. Atropa inhabits the threshold where the irreversible begins, and once you cross that line with them, there's no going back.
