The Swiss duo — bassist/vocalist I.R. and guitarist/vocalist S.M. — have crafted something that feels less like a record and more like an open wound slowly healing in real time. Shaped by a period of profound transformation and illness, Atropa doesn't just explore survival and irreversible change — it burns with them.

Where earlier E-L-R releases floated elegantly through doomgaze and post-metal atmospherics, Atropa introduces something darker, sharper, harder to pin down. The band themselves describe their sound as drifting "between weight and dissolution, beauty and poison," and that tension pulses through every track here. "Oaken Reaper" opens the ritual with crushing, meditative riffs that swell and recede like tides of distortion. "Archeress" follows with a hypnotic pull, I.R. and S.M.'s intertwined vocals hovering like ghostly apparitions above tectonic basslines. The album's emotional core might just be "Solace Tracery," a track that moves through stages of grief, delirium, obsessive love, and resilience with staggering grace. By the time the closing "Echo Space" fades into silence, you've been taken on a genuine rollercoaster — one that doesn't pull its punches.

The recording process itself mirrored the album's themes. Founding drummer M.K., whose emotive style had been integral to the band's identity since their 2016 formation in Bern, was forced to depart due to health issues during the early stages of creation. That loss echoes through Atropa like a spectre, but so does the fierce determination to continue. These six tracks inhabit the threshold where the irreversible begins — when the arrow is loosed, and the world can no longer remain the same. This is post-metal at its most poetic, doomgaze at its most dangerous.
