Finnish melodic death metal has always had a certain cinematic quality to it, but with "What We Leave Behind", Brymir take that to a whole new level. This is the band's fifth full-length, and it's their darkest, most emotionally charged offering yet. Frontman Viktor Storm Gullichsen, who works as a film sound designer by day, pours every ounce of that experience into these eight tracks. The result? A record that feels less like an album and more like a soundtrack to a world falling apart — and finding fragments of hope in the rubble.
From the very first notes, it's clear that Brymir aren't messing around. The riffs hit hard, the blast beats are relentless, and yet there's this incredible sense of melody weaving through the chaos. Tracks like the title song "What We Leave Behind" balance crushing heaviness with soaring, almost majestic choruses that'll get stuck in your head for days. Gullichsen's vocals switch effortlessly between guttural roars and clean, anthemic singing — a dynamic that keeps you on edge throughout. The rhythm section of bassist Jarkko Niemi and drummer Patrik Fält provides a thunderous foundation, while guitarist Joona Björkroth layers on these intricate, frostbitten leads that scream Scandinavian winter.
