Background information about 'Nightfall'
The Swedish doom metal legends Candlemass unleashed their sophomore masterpiece "Nightfall" in 1987, and what a monumental slab of crushing metal it remains to this day! This album stands as one of the finest examples of epic doom metal ever committed to wax, featuring the iconic vocal prowess of Messiah Marcolin whose operatic delivery became the template for countless doom vocalists that followed. From the haunting opening notes of "Gothic Stone" to the spine-chilling finale of "Black Candles", every track drips with medieval atmosphere and bone-crushing heaviness.
The songwriting here is absolutely phenomenal – tracks like "The Well of Souls" and "At the Gallows End" showcase the band's ability to craft epic compositions that are both crushingly heavy and hauntingly beautiful. The production captures that perfect late 80s metal sound, with thunderous drums, massive guitar tones, and Marcolin's soaring vocals sitting perfectly in the mix. This isn't just an album; it's a journey through dark castles and ancient rituals that will leave you spellbound.
