Background information about 'In Memoriam'

There is a primordial weight to Cathedral’s In Memoriam that still resonates with terrifying clarity decades later. This isn't just a collection of demos; it is the raw, unfiltered genesis of doom metal as we know it today. Released initially as a self-financed cassette in 1990, this compilation captures the band in its most feral state, before they polished their sound for the majestic Forest of Equilibrium. Here, the riffs are slower, heavier, and dripping with a sludge-like viscosity that feels like dragging chains through mud. The production is murky and earthy, perfectly suiting the deathly intent of tracks like "Mourning of a New Day" and "All Your Sins." It’s a time capsule of early '90s extreme metal, where the influence of pioneers like Trouble, Saint Vitus, and Pentagram is not just referenced but resurrected and twisted into something uniquely British and profoundly dark.

Listening to In Memoriam is like witnessing the birth of a monster. The live tracks from Holland and Belgium in 1991 add another layer of intensity, showcasing a band that had already mastered the art of oppressive, head-nodding heaviness. The bonus DVD featuring their live performance in Groningen is a crucial addition, proving that these studio recordings were just the preview of a live force that would shake the foundations of the underground scene. This edition is essential for any serious collector of doom, stoner, and sludge metal. It’s a reminder of when Cathedral were at their most dangerous and influential, setting the stage for everyone from Electric Wizard to Reverend Bizarre. Don't just listen to this album; feel its weight.
