Background information about 'In Memoriam'
There are demos, and then there are artifacts that fundamentally shift the tectonic plates of heavy music. Cathedral’s In Memoriam is the latter. Released in 1990, this self-financed cassette-turned-vinyl collection wasn’t just a demo reel; it was a dark prophecy realized. Before they became giants of doom metal, these Wolverhampton pioneers were forging a sound that was simultaneously ancient and terrifyingly modern. The tracks here are viscous, sludge-drenched, and dripping with a malevolent atmosphere that would go on to define the British doom scene for decades.
Listening to In Memoriam today is like witnessing the birth of a monster. The riffs are slow, crushing, and hypnotic, drawing heavily from the dark spirits of Trouble and Saint Vitus but injecting them with a raw, punk-fueled aggression that was rare in the early 90s. Tracks like Mourning of a New Day and All Your Sins aren't just songs; they are rituals. This double album compilation captures the raw energy of their 1990 demo sessions alongside live recordings from their early European tours, showcasing a band in its absolute prime. It is a essential document for anyone who believes that doom should be heavy, slow, and utterly devastating.
