Chilean thrashers Critical Defiance are back, and they've brought the fucking fire. "Rivers of Blood" is their fourth full-length assault, and let me tell you – this thing is a compact, 32-minute wrecking ball of pure, unfiltered old-school thrash metal fury. Formed in 2010 in Valparaíso, this band has been honing their craft through three previous albums – Misconception (2019), No Life Forms (2022), and The Search Won't Fall (2024) – and with this new record, they've sharpened their sound to a razor's edge.
What strikes you immediately about "Rivers of Blood" is how focused and relentless it is. Eight tracks, no filler, no bullshit. The band channels that violent South American intensity – think razor-sharp riffs, restless song structures, and a hatred-soaked delivery that feels genuinely dangerous. Sebastián Palominos' production is clean and punchy but thankfully retains that raw, organic immediacy that makes thrash metal sound alive. There's a darker atmosphere creeping through these songs too, a sense of dramatic tension that elevates the whole thing beyond just another speed-fest. This is the sound of a band hitting their stride with absolute conviction.
