Background information about 'Blood On Canvas'
Blood On Canvas is the sound of a band that never learned how to take its foot off the gas. Darkness come out of the German thrash underground with riffs that hit like a swung sledgehammer, and this record wastes absolutely no time getting to the point: "Wake Up In A Rage" opens the whole thing with a snarl, and from there it's a straight sprint through nine tracks of razorwire riffing, double-kick thunder and choruses that you'll be shouting back before the second spin. There's a real hunger in this stuff, the kind you only get from players who grew up trading tapes and standing in the front row of tiny clubs.
What makes it stick, though, is that Darkness aren't just about speed. "Night In Turmoil" and "Truth Is A Whore" slow the tempo just enough to let the grooves breathe, and the title track closes things out with a sense of menace that lingers long after the last chord dies. The production keeps everything raw and punchy, guitars pushed forward, bass rumbling underneath, vocals spat out with genuine venom. It's thrash the way it was meant to be played: loud, pissed off and gloriously unpolished.
