Background information about 'Soulside Journey'
Darkthrone's debut album "Soulside Journey" stands as a fascinating anomaly in the Norwegian legends' catalog - a pure death metal statement that predates their legendary transformation into black metal pioneers. Released originally in 1991, this album captures Fenriz, Nocturno Culto, and Dag Nilsen at their most technically proficient, delivering crushing riffs and complex arrangements that showcase their deep understanding of the death metal craft. The production, handled at Sunlight Studio in Stockholm, gives the album that classic Swedish death metal sound that was defining the genre at the time.
What makes "Soulside Journey" so compelling is how it reveals the foundation upon which Darkthrone would later build their black metal empire. Tracks like "Cromlech" and "Sunrise Over Locus Mortis" demonstrate the band's ability to weave atmospheric passages between brutal assaults, hinting at the ambient tendencies that would later flourish in their atmospheric black metal phase. The album's eight tracks flow seamlessly, creating a journey through dark, twisted landscapes that feel both ancient and timeless. It's a reminder that before they became the godfathers of Norwegian black metal, Darkthrone were already masters of extreme music.
