Some records don't knock politely. They kick the door in. Decayed have been hammering out raw, sulphurous black metal since the early nineties, and "Remnants ... Of A Past" is exactly the kind of scuffed, blood-and-dirt artefact that makes this band so beloved among those who like their metal ugly and honest. Five tracks crammed onto a black 7" — no filler, no padding, no mercy. The whole thing plays like a ritual half-remembered: "Initiation" opens with a cold, ceremonial riff that drags you straight into the pit, and by the time "Pagan Winds Return" hits its stride you're already somewhere far from home, surrounded by candle smoke and distortion.

What makes this EP such a joy is how unpolished it sounds — and I mean that as the highest compliment. The guitars are brittle and razor-edged, the drums rattle like they were tracked in a cellar, and the vocals sit somewhere between a curse and a sermon. "Shall Ascend" slows things down just enough to let the dread settle in, while "Drums Of Valhalla" and the closing "Hail Satan" are pure, unhinged, fist-in-the-air blasphemy. It's the sound of a band that never cared about trends, only about atmosphere and attitude.
