Background information about 'Forgotten Legends'

Some debuts announce themselves with a roar; Drudkh opened their account with a slow, cold breath of wind through birch trees. "Forgotten Legends" is where the Ukrainian outfit first carved out the sound that would define them: Slavonic pagan metal built on long, unfolding melodies, folk-flavoured guitar lines that seem to rise out of the soil itself, and an atmosphere so thick with melancholy you can almost feel the fog on your skin.

What still staggers about this record is its patience. The three epic pieces and the closing outro refuse to hurry, letting riffs circle and repeat until they stop feeling like riffs and start feeling like weather. There is grandeur here, but it is the grandeur of a landscape rather than a monument, all mist, distant bells and half-remembered rituals. The production is raw and hazy in the best possible way, a wall of sound that swallows you whole rather than politely introducing itself. Decades on, this is still the blueprint countless bands have tried to copy and rarely matched.
