Background information about 'Lock Up The Wolves'
Following the legendary Ronnie James Dio's departure from Black Sabbath and the dissolution of his collaboration with Ritchie Blackmore in Rainbow, "Lock Up The Wolves" stands as a powerful statement of artistic independence. This fifth studio album showcases Dio's unmistakable vocal prowess and his ability to craft epic tales of fantasy and struggle, wrapped in thunderous heavy metal arrangements. The title track delivers one of the most memorable choruses in Dio's catalog, while tracks like "Wild One" and "Born On The Sun" demonstrate the band's knack for combining accessibility with genuine heavy metal bite.
The album captures Dio at a crossroads, blending the mystical storytelling that made him famous with a more streamlined approach that doesn't sacrifice any of the power or drama. Songs like "Hey Angel" and "Between Two Hearts" show a more personal side while maintaining the larger-than-life atmosphere that defines classic Dio. The guitar work is consistently solid throughout, providing the perfect backdrop for Ronnie's soaring vocals and the rhythm section's thunderous foundation that keeps everything anchored in pure heavy metal territory.
