DRY WEDDING don't do easy listening. The Portland quartet's debut album The Back Of Beyond is a glorious, teeth-grinding collision of genres that really shouldn't work together — but somehow, miraculously, do. Imagine Nick Cave falling through a trapdoor into a black metal rehearsal space while a noise rock band plays in the next room, and you're getting close.
What makes this record so compelling is the restraint. Just when you expect the explosion, they pull back. When you think you've got them pegged as a gothic country act, they hit you with blast beats. Ferchow's vocals swing between haunted croon and desperate howl, while the rhythm section of Fuller and Ferguson locks into grooves that feel both ancient and deeply unhinged. Jarrod Green's multi-instrumental contributions add layers of dread and beauty in equal measure.
The whole thing was born from Craigslist ads — which somehow makes perfect sense. This is music made by people who knew exactly what they wanted but had to hunt through the shadows to find each other. The result is an album that feels like a secret handshake between genres, a love letter to the strange and the sideways.
