When Rune "Blasphemer" Eriksen steps away from the blast beats and blast furnace riffing of his black metal past, you know something interesting is about to happen. With Earth Electric, the former Mayhem axeman cracks open a whole different side of his musical brain, and "Vol.1: Solar" is the glorious result. This is hard rock with actual teeth, but it breathes, it swings, and it has the kind of progressive wanderlust that keeps you guessing from the first spin to the last.

What hits you immediately is how warm this record feels. There's a sun-drenched, almost psychedelic glow running through these nine tracks, a sense of wide-open space that feels closer to the 70s golden era than anything grim or frostbitten.
