Background information about 'Theories Of Emptiness'
Evergrey have never been a band to take the easy road, and "Theories Of Emptiness" finds Tom S. Englund and his crew digging even deeper into the shadows. This is progressive metal with a heavy heart — huge, cinematic arrangements that swell and crash, twin guitar lines that twist around each other like ivy, and that unmistakable voice, weathered and raw, carrying every line like it costs him something. The Swedes have spent decades refining this balance of muscle and melancholy, and here it feels sharper than ever: the riffs hit hard, the keyboards add a cold, wintry shimmer, and the rhythm section keeps everything moving with real purpose.
What makes this record land is its sense of drama. Tracks build patiently, then detonate; quiet passages leave room to breathe before the next wave hits. There is darkness here, sure, but it is the kind that pulls you in rather than pushes you away — the sound of a band still hungry, still curious, still willing to stare into the void and write a melody about it. Guest spots from Jonas Renkse and Salina Englund add extra texture and a couple of genuinely goosebump-raising moments. If you have followed Evergrey through the years, this is another strong chapter. If you have not, it is a hell of a place to start.
