There are bands that age like fine wine, and then there are bands that just keep hacking away at the same rotten corpse with an ever-sharper blade. Exhumed belong firmly in that second camp, and "To The Dead" is the sound of a band that has absolutely no intention of slowing down. More than three decades into their career of gore-soaked death metal, Matt Harvey and his crew of grave robbers come back swinging with the kind of ferocious, blood-spattered assault that made their name in the first place.

From the opening lurch of "Putrescine and Cadaverine" straight through to the final grimy seconds of "Disgusted", this is death metal played with a grin full of broken teeth. The riffs are carved from old-school Carcass-style filth, the drumming is relentless and precise, and the whole thing reeks of the morgue in the best possible way. What sets Exhumed apart is that they never forget the "fun" in "funeral" — there's a gleeful, almost punkish energy running through these ten tracks that keeps the record from ever feeling like a slog. The dual vocal attack, the surgical leads, the occasional melodic flash that cuts through the murk like a scalpel — it's all here, and it's all dialed up to maximum. "To The Dead" is a love letter to everything gross and glorious about the genre, delivered by a band that still clearly lives for this stuff.
