Background information about 'Extreme Deformity'
"Extreme Deformity" is Pungent Stench doing what they have always done best: dragging death metal through the gutter and coming up grinning. This is the Austrian trio at their most gleefully unhinged, all downtuned riff slabs, lurching mid-tempo grooves and that unmistakable, sickly sense of humour that made them cult heroes in the first place. Nothing here is polished for comfort. The guitars grind like rusted machinery, the drums swing between a stomp and a pummel, and the vocals spit out every line with the sneer of a band who never once asked for permission.
What keeps it thrilling rather than merely nasty is the songwriting. Pungent Stench understand that a great death metal record needs hooks as much as it needs heaviness, and they bury them deep in the murk — a sudden thrash break, a doom-slow crawl, a riff that lodges itself in your skull and refuses to leave. It is ugly, it is funny, it is genuinely heavy, and it never overstays its welcome. For anyone who grew up taping late-night metal radio and hunting down import CDs, this is the sound of the underground refusing to grow up gracefully.
For fans of: Autopsy, Carcass, Master, Asphyx, Benediction
