Background information about 'Extreme Deformity'

Some records don't just get reissued — they get exhumed, and "Extreme Deformity" is a proper autopsy table of a release. Pungent Stench were never the polite face of Austrian extremity, and this collection drags their 1989 debut EP back into the light with all four original tracks intact, including the long-lost "Rip You Without Care" that collectors have been whispering about for decades. What you get here is the sound of a band figuring out exactly how ugly they wanted to be, and deciding the answer was "very."

The real treasure sits on the flip side: a previously unreleased live recording captured at Arena in Vienna on 9 December 1988, when the group was still a raw, hungry machine. "In The Vault," "Mucous Secretion," "Festered Offals," "Hypnos," "Pulsating Protoplasma" and "Dead Body Love" tumble out of the speakers with rehearsal-room grit and zero polish, which is precisely the point. And then there's the oddity that makes this pressing special — "Embalmed In Sulphuric Acid," cut in a Vienna rehearsal room one afternoon with Jacek Perkowski, Shane Embury, Martin Schirenc, Lee Dorrian, Mick Harris and Phil Vane in the same room. Members of Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror sharing a session with Pungent Stench? That's a snapshot of a scene at its most incestuous and most thrilling.
