Background information about 'Extreme Deformity'
Some records don't just get reissued — they get dragged back out of the grave, still twitching. "Extreme Deformity" is exactly that kind of resurrection, and Pungent Stench were never the band to do anything politely. This is the complete, grimy picture of a moment when Austrian death metal was young, ugly and utterly convinced of its own genius.
The first half is the legendary 1989 EP in full: "Extreme Defomity", "Mucous Secretion" and "Molecular Disembowelment" still sound like a butcher's shop with the lights off, all downtuned riffing, gurgled filth and that unmistakable sense of humour lurking beneath the gore. Then comes the real treasure — "Rip You Without Care" in its lost version, plus a rehearsal-room take on "Embalmed In Sulphuric Acid" performed by Intestinal Infestation, with Martin Schirenc on guitar and a vocal pile-up featuring Lee Dorrian, Mick Harris and the late Phil Vane, plus Shane Embury on drums. A grindcore summit meeting, captured on tape. The flip side delivers the whole Vienna Arena show from 9 December 1988, and it is glorious: raw, sweaty, barely controlled, with "Festered Offals", "Hypnos" and "Pulsating Protoplasma" landing like fists.
