Background information about 'The Cold (Re-Release)'

Flotsam and Jetsam's "The Cold" from 2010 ranks among the very best in their 30-plus-year career. After kicking things off with absolute classics like "Doomsday for the Deceiver" and "No Place for Disgrace," the band struggled to keep that fire burning consistently. 2005's "Dreams of Death" hinted at a turnaround but was held back by a budget-starved production. Five years on, riding a wave of nostalgia from their re-released back catalogue, Flotsam and Jetsam returned with easily their strongest effort since those two legendary albums.

Now armed with the tools needed to succeed, the band delivers on every song, and "The Cold" flourishes. Travis Smith again supplies stunning artwork. "Hypocrite" kicks things off with a typical Flotsam heavy rocker, but it's clear from the start that much more effort has gone into structure and delivery this time around. It's the second track "Take" where the new style truly shines, complementing Eric A.K.'s unique, powerful vocals. He really outdoes himself here, lifting both himself and the band to a new level. Musically, the band takes a more modern slant while keeping their personality intact, mixing old and new with ease. Riffs recycled from the 80s sit perfectly alongside Nevermore-esque rumble, and the solos are abundant throughout. If this was Ed Carlson's final fling, he bowed out with a bang. A band coming back 25 years later, after all the setbacks and failed expectations, and delivering something this fresh and this good is simply inspirational.
