Background information about 'The Link'
The Link is where Gojira stopped being a promising French curiosity and became a force of nature. Originally landing in 2003, this is the record that welded the Bayonne brothers' tectonic riffing to something stranger and more spiritual — death metal muscle stretched over odd time signatures, tribal drumming and sudden pockets of eerie calm. Joseph Duplantier's roar sounds like it's being dragged up from the ocean floor, while Mario Duplantier's kit work is simply absurd: restless, precise, always pushing where a lesser band would settle. "Remembrance" and "Embrace The World" hit like landslides, and the eleven-minute-plus closing sprawl of "Dawn" still feels like staring into something vast and indifferent.
What makes The Link so rewarding decades on is how unpolished it still sounds. This is a band figuring out its own language in real time — raw, hungry, occasionally ugly, and all the better for it. The grooves are thick enough to lean on, the dynamics snap from whisper to avalanche without warning, and the whole thing carries that unmistakable early-2000s metal energy where experimentation wasn't a marketing angle but a compulsion. It's the sound of four musicians refusing to pick a lane, and it's glorious.
