About the album
Emerging from the mystical depths of the forest, "Birna" marks the sixth studio album by Wardruna, released under Sony Music and By Norse Music. Einar Selvik, the band's main composer, delves into a profound conversation with nature, seeking the voice of the bear. "Birna," which translates to bear in Old Norse, is a tribute to the forest's guardian and her earthly struggles. As modern society encroaches upon her habitat, she retreats into a state of perpetual hibernation. Consequently, the forest mourns for its vibrant heart—its protector—and yearns for her return. The bear, a revered figure in ancient northern hemisphere myths and still honored by many indigenous cultures as a totemic creature, represents both our feared predator and revered guide. The rhythmic heartbeat of this slumbering giant, at approximately nine beats per minute, echoes throughout the album. This cyclical rhythm is embedded in nature's fabric and ancient worldviews, fueling Selvik's creative spirit. "Birna" embodies Selvik's philosophy of sowing new seeds while strengthening old roots. Ancient instruments combined with modern soundscapes and natural recordings offer a rare introspective journey into our connection with nature.

About the album
HEILUNG means "healing" in the German language and this also describes the core of the band's sound. The listener is supposed to be left at ease and in a relaxed state after a magical musical journey that is at times turbulent. "Futha" was three years in the making and was finished for production and print at midwinter, the very darkest day of the solar year. At the opposite to "Ofnir", the new album is the counterpart, the balance point, the feminine side. Here, the lyrics originate from old Icelandic poetry. Hence, female voices are more prominent on "Futha".
Any attempt to link the band with or bring their music into a modern political or religious context is pointless, since HEILUNG try to connect their listeners with a time before the coming of christianity and modern political ideologies.
For fans of WARDRUNA, NEST, IVAR BJØRNSON & EINAR SELVIK'S SKUGGSJA & HUGSJA.
