Background information about 'Nefarious Dismal Orations'

Some records don't just arrive, they creep in through the floorboards. "Nefarious Dismal Orations", the fourth full-length from Inquisition, first surfaced in 2007 and remains one of the strangest, most hypnotic documents of American black metal. The formula sounds almost absurdly simple on paper: two men, guitar and drums, no bass, no safety net. Yet what Dagon and Incubus conjure here is a kind of ritual hypnosis, riffs that circle and coil like smoke in a crypt while those unmistakable croaking, multi-tracked rasps intone the whole thing like a sermon delivered from somewhere far below.

What makes the album so gripping is its patience. Nothing here rushes. The guitar work is all cold, deliberate tremolo and strange harmonic shimmer, and the drumming is a masterclass in restraint and release, rolling and tumbling exactly when the tension needs to snap. Tracks like the title cut and the sprawling "Through the Infinite Sphere Our Majesty Shall Rise" build their atmosphere out of repetition rather than bombast, and that is precisely the point. This is music for the long haul, for candlelight and headphones, for listeners who like their extremity served with an eerie, almost psychedelic sense of space. It is cult black metal in the truest sense, uncompromising, idiosyncratic, and utterly its own thing.
