Background information about 'Not Alone'
John Coffey have spent the better part of two decades turning European festival fields into one giant, sweaty, shouting-along congregation, and "Not Alone" is the record that finally bottles that feeling. The Dutch four-piece have never been subtle — they play like the amps are about to give out and the floor is about to give way — but here the fury comes with a purpose. Every gang-vocal chorus, every ragged riff, every drum fill that lands like a shove in the back is aimed squarely at the person standing alone in the crowd, and the band want you to know you are not that person.
The title track and "Push Push Push" are the obvious fists in the air, all piston-limbed rhythms and hooks that lodge themselves somewhere behind your ribs after a single listen. But the real thrill is in the details: the way "Hang the Choir" opens the record at a dead sprint, the bruised, almost tender swing of "It's You", the snarling defiance of "All Bark, No Bite" that closes things out with a grin and a black eye. It is loud, it is political without ever turning into a lecture, and it is built for rooms full of strangers who leave as friends.
