Background information about 'Spiritually Uncontrolled Art'

Some records don't need a long career behind them to earn their legend status. "Spiritually Uncontrolled Art" is one of those. Liers in Wait rose from the ashes of Grotesque, and with Kristian Wahlin (the one and only Necrolord) steering the ship as bandleader and creative force, they cut a single EP that clocks in at under twenty minutes and still hits harder than most full-lengths released in the decades since.

This is a genuine Lovecraftian maelstrom of extreme technical death metal. Riffs shift so fast you barely get a grip on one before the next slams you sideways, the drumming is razor sharp, and every so often the chaos opens up into a brief atmospheric solo or a chunky, crushing riff that lands like a hammer. Tomas Lindberg and Alf Svensson were out of the picture by this point, so Wahlin surrounded himself with capable players and let his vision run wild. It was the only thing the band ever recorded, and Wahlin himself has said he wishes there had been more.

What makes it so special is the timing. Back in the early 90s this kind of technical death and black metal hybrid was completely fresh, and this EP sits right at the bleeding edge of it. It is brutal, demanding, and genuinely difficult listening if you are not prepared, but give it a few spins and the sinister logic reveals itself. For anyone who lives and breathes early underground death metal, this is essential.
