Background information about 'Nothing'

Let's cut right to the chase: Meshuggah's Nothing is a tectonic plate shift in heavy music. Originally released in 2002, this album didn't just push boundaries - it redrew the entire map of what metal could sound like. The Swedish quintet stripped back their sound to its bare, mechanical essence and rebuilt it from the ground up, trading some of the chaotic fury of Destroy Erase Improve for a more focused, almost mathematical precision. The result? A monolithic masterpiece that still sounds like it's beaming in from the year 3000.

From the opening polyrhythmic assault of Stengah to the closing atmospheric dread of Obsidian, Nothing is a masterclass in controlled aggression. Tracks like Rational Gaze and Straws Pulled at Random showcase the band's uncanny ability to lock into hypnotic, lurching grooves that somehow feel both alien and deeply physical. Jens Kidman's barked vocals have never sounded more commanding, while Fredrik Thordendal and Mårten Hagström's downtuned, eight-string guitar work created a wall of sound so thick you could build a bunker out of it. This is the album where Meshuggah fully became Meshuggah - the blueprint that countless bands would try (and mostly fail) to replicate.
