Background information about 'Communion'
Greek symphonic death metal titans Septicflesh delivered something truly spectacular with "Communion", their first studio album after reuniting in 2007. This release marked a pivotal moment in the band's career, showcasing their evolution from their earlier brutal death metal roots into a more orchestral and atmospheric direction. The album seamlessly blends crushing death metal riffs with haunting symphonic arrangements, creating an epic soundscape that feels both ancient and futuristic. Tracks like "Anubis" and "Persepolis" demonstrate the band's ability to craft memorable hooks while maintaining their extreme metal credibility.
The production on "Communion" is absolutely crushing, with each instrument sitting perfectly in the mix to create maximum impact. Sotiris Vayenas' guitar work is particularly noteworthy, delivering both technical prowess and emotional depth throughout the album's nine tracks. The symphonic elements never feel forced or gimmicky - instead they enhance the overall atmosphere and add layers of complexity that reward repeated listening. This album essentially laid the groundwork for what would become Septicflesh's signature sound in the years to follow.
