Background information about 'Hellish Expectations'

Midnight have never pretended to be anything other than what they are: a filthy, feral, gloriously ugly noise made by a man in a hood who worships at the altar of Venom, Motörhead and every sleazy punk record that ever got thrown at a wall. "Hellish Expectations" is exactly that promise kept — a lean, mean slab of blackened speed metal that kicks the door in, sets the furniture on fire and leaves before anyone thinks to call the cops. Athenar does not write epics. He writes two-and-a-half-minute detonations, and this record is wall-to-wall detonations.

What makes it so addictive is the swagger. The riffs are simple, dumb in the best possible way, and absolutely impossible to shake — the kind of hooks that burrow in after one spin and stay there for weeks. The production is raw but not sloppy, all fuzzed-out guitars, clattering cymbals and a bass tone that sounds like a truck full of gravel. There is no filler, no ballad, no moment of reflection. Just one filthy anthem after another, delivered with the sneering confidence of a band that knows exactly what its audience came for.

This is the sound of a basement show at 2 a.m., sweat on the ceiling and beer on the floor, and it is an absolute blast. If you like your metal mean, fast and completely unrepentant, "Hellish Expectations" delivers on every single one of its promises. Crank it loud and let the neighbours complain.
