Satanic Royalty is the sound of a band that never once considered asking for permission. Midnight — the one-man filth engine from Cleveland — took the rawest strands of Venom, Motörhead and early Bathory and dragged them through a gutter, and the result is an album that smells of spilled beer, cheap leather and pure spite. Every riff is a fist, every chorus a chant you already know before you have heard it once. Athenar plays everything himself and does it with the swagger of a man who knows exactly how ugly he wants this to sound — and how catchy it still turns out to be.
What makes Satanic Royalty such a perennial favourite is the balance. It is nasty, but never stupid. It is lo-fi, but the songs are built like tanks. Tracks like the title cut and the sleazy stompers around it hit with the same gleeful, greasy energy that made the first wave of black metal and speed metal so irresistible in the first place. This is music for basements, for dive bars, for turning a Tuesday night into a small riot. It does not ask to be taken seriously as art — it demands to be played loud, and it wins.
