If you like your rock 'n' roll dragged through a gutter, set on fire, and then handed back to you with a grin, "Shox of Violence" is your new favourite record. Midnight — the one-man wrecking crew from Cleveland fronted by the masked Athenar — built this thing like a jukebox that only plays the filthiest, fastest, most gleefully obnoxious songs ever pressed to wax. The originals come at you like a bar fight in a phone booth: "Death Scream" and "Ready for Destruction" are pure speed-metal adrenaline, while "Groin Gripper" and "Sadist Sodomystic Seducer" wallow in exactly the kind of sleaze that makes parents nervous. It is dumb in the best possible way, and it is played with total conviction.

But the real treat here is the covers. Midnight doesn't just tip a hat to their heroes — they tear through them with the same reckless joy, from Venom's "In League with Satan" and "Too Loud for the Crowd" to The Spits' four-song barrage, plus deep cuts from Taipan, Mistreater, Black Ax, Scarab, Crucifixion, Girlschool and Quiet Riot. There's even a snarling take on The Sonics' "The Witch" and a pair of live ragers in "Unholy and Rotten" and "...on the Wings of Satan". It's a love letter written in gasoline, and the demos "Vomit Queen" and "Cross Held High" close the whole thing out like a dirty secret.
