Background information about 'Damnous'

Nordjevel have never been a band content with standing still, and "Damnous" is the sound of a machine shifting into a higher, far uglier gear. Formed in Askim in 2015 around vocalist Doedsadmiral, the Norwegians spent three records carving out their own corner of Scandinavian black metal, and the arrival of guitarist Destructhor (ex-Morbid Angel, Myrkskog, Zyklon) has pushed them away from the melodic, folk-tinged charm of their debut and straight into a denser, death-metal-informed assault. It is a heavier, meaner beast, and it hits like a wall of frozen granite.

What makes "Damnous" such a rewarding listen is the way it refuses to pick a single lane. Doedsadmiral's lyrics of war, death, anti-Christianity and Norse mythology are delivered in both Norwegian and English, riding over blistering tremolo storms one minute and easing into slower, melodic passages the next. Guitars, bass and guest vocals were tracked at Studio Nyhagen with engineer Kjartan Hesthagen, then mixed and mastered at Studio Fredman by Fredrik Nordström, who also handled the band's previous album "Gnavhòl". The result is a record that sounds enormous without ever feeling polished into sterility, and the closing cover of Limbonic Art's "Pits of the Cold Beyond" is a genuinely great way to go out. This is the most fully assembled statement in a catalogue built from the start on a close reading of Norwegian landscape and folklore.
