The project, born from the restless creative minds of Fates Warning veterans Jim Matheos and Ray Alder, strips away the progressive metal architecture we've come to expect and replaces it with something far more vulnerable: mood, memory, and the kind of melodies that don't announce themselves but slowly seep into your bones.

Really Good Terrible Things isn't an album you listen to — it's one you inhabit. From the opening shimmer of "Open Book" through the devastating closer "No Maps," Matheos and Alder craft a world where post-rock textures collide with introspective songwriting that feels almost uncomfortably intimate. Alder's voice, freed from the soaring demands of prog metal, reveals new dimensions here — softer, weary in the most beautiful way, carrying lyrics that read like pages torn from a journal someone forgot to hide. "Flowers in Decay" blooms with gorgeous, slow-burning guitar work, while "Unmoved" builds tension through restraint rather than release. The production is crystalline, every note placed with surgical care yet somehow bleeding with warmth. Tracks like "Throwing Stones" and "Empty" ache with a quiet desperation that never tips into melodrama, and "We Move Around the Sun" might be one of the most transcendent pieces either musician has ever put their name to. This is music for late nights, for long drives with no destination, for the moments when you need to feel less alone in your own head.
