Background information about 'Bergtagen'
Before folk metal became a costume party, Otyg were already deep in the moss and the mist. "Bergtagen" gathers the band's very first demo recordings, and hearing them now, remastered from the original tapes, is like stumbling onto a clearing you didn't know existed. This is Vintersorg and company at their most unpolished and most alive: riffs that actually breathe, rhythms that lurch and sway like a long walk through wet forest, violin and jaw harp weaving in and out of the gloom. Nothing here is dressed up for anybody.
What gets called a demo never really behaves like one on this record. These songs are fully formed, hooks and all, played with a conviction that a lot of slicker productions never manage to fake. There is dirt under the fingernails, and that is exactly the point. Remastered in 2025 by Vintersorg himself, the material finally gets the depth and warmth it always deserved, letting the melodies open up without scrubbing away the rawness.
If you came to this sound through the polished end of the genre, do yourself a favour and go back to the source. "Bergtagen" is where the spirit lives.
