Background information about 'The Room of Shadows'

There are reissues, and then there are resurrections. Pagan Altar's "The Room of Shadows" belongs firmly in the second category — a record that sounds like it was dragged out of a damp English cellar, dusted off, and handed to you by candlelight. This is the fourth album from the British doom pioneers, and it is also the last one to feature the late Terry Jones behind the microphone, which alone makes it a document worth treasuring. Ten years on from its original appearance, it still casts a long, cold shadow.

What makes it so special is the way it refuses to pick a single lane. Seventies proto-doom rumbles underneath everything, but the guitars keep wandering off into mystical English folk, gritty hard rock and proper, fist-raising heavy metal. One minute you are trudging through fog, the next a riff opens up like a cathedral door. Jones narrates it all like a ghost story told too close to your ear, and the whole thing unfolds into a macabre universe of olde — witches, ruins, and things better left unspoken. It is theatrical without ever being silly, and heavy without ever needing to shout.

Fans of the band's earlier work will recognise the DNA instantly, but newcomers should simply press play and let the atmosphere do its work. This edition keeps the flame burning for a catalogue that deserves to stay in print forever.
