Background information about 'The Room of Shadows'

Pagan Altar never needed to hurry. The British outfit built its legend slowly, on a handful of recordings that traded speed for atmosphere and volume for dread, and "The Room of Shadows" stands as the final chapter written with the incomparable Terry Jones behind the microphone. Ten years on, Dying Victims Productions brings this fourth full-length back to life, and it still feels like stumbling into a candlelit room where the walls are older than the songs themselves.

What makes this record so gripping is the way it refuses to pick a lane. Seventies proto-doom riffs drag themselves forward like something waking from a long sleep, while mystical English folk melodies drift through the corners and hard rock muscle keeps the whole thing from floating away. It is heavy metal, yes, but heavy metal that has read too many old books and spent too many nights staring at churchyards. Terry Jones delivers every line like a warning, half storyteller, half ghost, and the band behind him knows exactly when to crush and when to hold back. The 10" companion piece adds another layer to the ritual, and the etched fourth side turns the whole package into an object worth holding.

This is doom for people who like their riffs slow, their atmosphere thick and their history intact. A reissue that honours the original while giving newcomers the perfect doorway in.
