Background information about 'Her Cold Materials'
Phantom Winter, the Würzburg-based band originally formed as a side project of the instrumental powerhouse Omega Massif, delivers a formidable and dark piece with their latest concept album. This release explores the intricate melding of black and post-metal with sludgy ambient textures and post-punk vibes. The album's six slow-churning tracks are meticulously crafted, revealing layers of sonic intricacies that evoke an eerie, brooding atmosphere. The band's storytelling is influenced by Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials," further enhanced by spoken word samples in both English and German. Melancholic yet epic in its execution, the album features machine-like staccato drumming, contrasting melodic E-Bow leads, clean vocals, and menacing growls, creating an unsettling yet captivating listening experience.
