There are death metal records that bludgeon you, and then there is "Been Caught Buttering" — an album that walks into the room, grins, and dares you to keep eye contact. Pungent Stench were never interested in being tasteful, and that is exactly the point. This is the Austrian trio at their most gleefully unhinged, dragging filthy, groove-heavy riffs through a swamp of pitch-black humour and grinding, mid-tempo brutality. Every riff lands like a slab of meat hitting a butcher's block, and the rhythm section swings with a sickening, almost rock 'n' roll swagger that most bands in the genre could only dream of.
What makes this record so enduring is its personality. It does not try to be the fastest or the most technical — it simply oozes attitude, from the lurching stomp of the opening cuts to the twisted, memorable hooks buried under all that grime. The guitars are thick and greasy, the vocals a guttural sneer, and the whole thing feels like a late-night horror show you cannot look away from. It is ugly in the best possible way, and it has aged like a fine, deeply questionable wine.
