Background information about 'Been Caught Buttering'

Some albums don't just sit in a genre, they define it. "Been Caught Buttering" is that record for Pungent Stench — a 1991 slab of filth that doesn't try to out-tech anyone, doesn't chase trends, and doesn't care whether you can keep up. It simply distills death metal down to its rotten, glorious essence. Buzzsaw guitars slice through everything in their path, the drums land with the cold precision of a hammer, and the bass pulses underneath like something breathing in the dark. Solos tear through the murk without warning, while the vocals bark out tales of depravity with a gleeful, maniacal sneer. Everything is drenched in grime, and that's exactly the point.

What makes this record so special is how singular it is. Joel-Peter Witkin's cover piece "The Kiss" — a cadaver head split in two, the halves laid side by side like lovers — sets the tone before a single note plays. And then there's the secret weapon: a rock undercurrent that bends and twists rather than the other way around. Where later death 'n' roll bands dressed rock up in metal clothing, Pungent Stench contorts rock until it fits their twisted frame. The result is elemental, pure, and utterly unmatched in their catalog. This remastered edition drags every ounce of that filth into the light with fresh clarity — and it still reeks beautifully.
