Background information about 'We Rot Within'
There is a particular kind of fury that only comes out of the rehearsal room, and Refusal have bottled it whole on "We Rot Within". This is death metal that refuses to sit still — it lurches, it sprints, it slams on the brakes just long enough to let you catch your breath before the next riff caves your chest in. The guitars are filthy in the best possible way, all down-tuned churn and razor-wire tremolo, while the rhythm section plays like it is trying to escape something. Nine tracks, no filler, no wasted seconds.
What makes this record stick is the songwriting underneath the violence. "Get Insight" stretches past the four-minute mark and actually earns it, twisting through tempo shifts that feel deliberate rather than showy. "Short On Ammo" is a two-minute sledgehammer, gone before you can process it. And the closing title track drags the whole thing down into a slow, ugly crawl that lingers long after the last note dies. It is the sound of a band that knows exactly what it wants and takes it.
