Nightbearer returns with their crushing third full-length album "Defiance." The German death dealers from the city of Paderborn in Eastern Westphalia have hammered out an LP that retains their signature HM-2 chainsaw guitar sound while maintaining an unapologetic love for melodic death metal of the Swedish kind. "Defiance" marks another step in the careful but steady evolution of their sound by weaving in occasional black metal passages and doom-spiced moments to their old school foundation. The result is a more atmospheric album that perfectly complements its conceptual themes.

The lyrics are directly inspired by Sir Philip Pullman's renowned "His Dark Materials" trilogy, exploring humanity's quest for emancipation from religious oppression. Formed by vocalist Michael Torka and guitarist Dominik Hellmuth in 2017, Nightbearer was driven by a fervent passion for old school death metal's golden age of the 1990s. Their debut full-length album "Tales of Sorcery and Death" (2019) gained critical acclaim and a top ten position (#8) on Germany Rock Hard magazine's soundcheck chart. With their sophomore "Ghosts of a Darkness to Come" (2022), they expanded lyrical themes into epic conceptual narratives based on Robert Jordan's 'The Wheel of Time.' Now, with "Defiance," Nightbearer offers a powerful act grounded in Pullman's literary universe.
